Folksonomies and Tagging

Delicious another favourite tool of mine. Bookmarks that travel with you instead of having to Add to Favourites each time you log on to a different PC. Yeah! Reference staff often log on to different PCs at our library and it is very frustrating to have to add your favourite links to every computer that you use for reference enquiries.

Delicious is the answer to every reference librarian's prayers - see my favourite bookmarks listed on my blog.

I can see how it would be a useful tool for research/study assistance - you can share your bookmarks with fellow students - anybody if you wish.

LibraryThing - haven't had a chance to use yet will explore further when I have time - I can see that it could be a useful tool for book clubs.

RSS Feeds

Newsreaders are a favourite tool of mine - they are a one stop shop which help me keep up with all the latest news from my favourite blogs and news feeds.

I use Bloglines to keep up with latest IT news, new books, how libraries are using web 2.0 technologies. Just a few of the feeds I subscribe to are Tame the web, Stephen Abram, Australian IT news, Courier Mail Technology News, IT News Australia.

I am interested in technology and how my library can use it to extend services to its customers. These feeds help me to keep up with advances libraries are making.

Some great library blogs - Between the stacks, Blurb it, Taste of Web 2.0, Web 2.0 Resources

Social Networking

I am a Facebook user I like to keep up with friends and their photos. It was also handy to keep in touch with my kids when they were overseas - just to make sure they weren't locked up in jail somewhere and needed me to rescue them! I am a reader though rather than an avid writer on Facebook.

As for libraries it seems that the common trend for using social networking sites is to advertise What's On. I do like UQ's use of Facebook - what a great idea. Although I am not sure how you would find them as I cannot see where you can be a fan or friend but then I did not have much time to have a good look - maybe somebody can enlighten me? They probably only want staff and students using the catalogue anyway so I guess they would have an in.

Wikis

Wikis, I think, are a very useful tool for sharing information. Interested groups of people are able to collaborate on a project, even though they may live in another state or country, without leaving their desk.

A useful tool for information sharing amongst professionals.

In libraries information and ideas can be shared. The Local History or Corporate Libraries would find a wiki useful to share information amongst library staff and customers.

What about a wiki for an online book club?

Wikis are easy to use and a great tool to share information.

Shoeburyness Beach Essex, leigh on Sea, Southend on Sea

This is the beach my family and I swam at during the summer months in England. It is a far cry from the beautiful pristine beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. The beach was very rocky and I used to wear plimsolls so that I wouldn't cut my feet open.

This picture does bring back fond memories of my time as a young child living in Southend-on-Sea.

Licence 2 Test Drive

This is a fantastic concept! I am excited about our library staff learning more about Web 2.0 technologies and how they can use them personally and professionally.

All our staff received blog training last year with the intention of following up with the 23Things program. But alas we had a few technical problems and this went by the wayside. So I was excited to hear about SLQ taking up the challenge of the 23Things program.

I believe libraries should incorporate Web 2.0 technologies - not necessarily all. I don't think we should do it just for the sake of it but use what works for you.
